I was with the squadron in 59, 60, & 61. We had the F3H Demons. Definitely not the fastest A/C in the fleet but a good weapons platform and we got the job done. The squadron won 3 Battle E's and 3 safety awards during this time period.

I'm a former ABHAN and was stationed on the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) which deployed with CVW-3 for the '98-'99 Med.Cruise. VF-32 has the 100 series side numbers now. CVW-3 and VF-32 are currently deployed with the Truman overseas now for six more months. And the F-117 is the Night Hawk,not the Shadow Hawk. Anyways,I'm very impressed with your site,when I get the chance I'll send you some "Tom" pics of VF-32 and of the other birds in CVW-3. Great Job!

Please note! on reference to squadron history of VF74. VF74 was assigned to the USS Forretal CVA59 as early as 1962 as part of CAG8 it remained there until the ships transfer to westpac. I don't believe VF74 was involved in the fire.

I've always wondered what those four "ribs" on the top of the Tomcat's fuselage are for. It'd be nice if someone could tell me what specific purpose those things serve. Thanks. BTW, I think the F/A-18E/F will bring the end to carrier aviation as we know it. It brings nothing new to carrier aviation( other than cheaper operating costs)and it's actually a step down from what the F-14/A-6 equipped carriers were capable of. Our carriers will be more vulnerable and less capable with it. The navy should've gone w/ the upgraded Tomcat versions or the ATF. Thanks a lot Cheney, You screwed carrier aviation! The end.

Your site is the absolute best. I've got a word to say to "Michel Klaver" Your picture of A/C NK106 is Awesome and I was wondering what year did you take that shot? I was the plane captain on that A/C from 1976 to 1977. What is really sad is I don't have any pictures of my A/C except for the year book pictures. I have just recently built a model of A/C NK106 and I am going to build one of a KC135 from the unit I am currently with. This is a great site and I recommend it to anyone that is into F-14's.

Hi there, I was wondering if you have any information as to how the glove reacts to open vs. swept wings. All pics that I can find shows the space between the fuselage and the glove being quite small while the wings are open, however when the are closed it is very hard to tell. Nice Web site. I servered with the Fighting Aardvarks of VF-114 from November 1989 until decomissioning as their Maintenance Analyst. I was an enlisted E-6 (AZ1) at the time. I sailed in USS Enterprise (CVN-65) and USS Lincoln (CVN-72) during my tour with the squadron. I left the service 1995 and now work fo IBM. I am currently going to civilian flight school in anticipation of changing jobs to airline pilot sometime in the next couple of years. Keep up the good work!

Great Web Site!!! I was an aviation electrician with VF-14. 74-77. I was looking in the files about an aircraft we lost in the atlantic. It was BuNo 159012. I was the flight deck trouble shooter during this launch. While the ordanance men were arming the side winders the pilot with his hands in the air, the aircraft's throttles went to 100%. The ordanance man didn't get out of the way soon enough. His foot was caught under the right main mount. The aircraft took off and the pilot and RIO ejected. The pilot, our CO wound up in the ocean and the RIO wound up on the deck. The aircraft was recovered due to the missiles on board. We researched the throttle control computer and foud out that this computer was known to be bad in another aircraft.

My first visit to the site. The Tomcat is a truly wonderful aircraft.

Great source of data and photos, even in my library of 129 books and 32 videos they do not compare to this one site. The one problem is the cockpit data lists do not include photo these would be indespenable to someone super detailing a model tomcat. I will refer back to this site often while working on my vf 84/vf 103 model series. Do you know of any site I may obtain paint scheme and markings for the aircraft used by the Jolly Rogers sqdn. from thier past, ie; VF-17, VF-61, VF-84, and now the VF-103 Jolly Rogers?

Hi,I am an r.c modeller and would like to talk to others with the same interest.I design my own models,and have been building an F-14 from my own plans .It is an EXACT scale model in terms of outlines and cross sections.Variable geometry wings also operate on this model.No complex epoxy/glass moulds,all built up from liteply and balsa. To make operating and flying costs low,it's only compromise to scale is that it is powered by a 2-stroke tractor prop set-up. I participated in the first mission that took F-14A's to Iran. I was a crew chief on tankers back then and the sight of the beautifully camouflaged F-14s flying beside and behind us in one I'll always remember.

Flew Phantoms and Tomcats with VF-31 from 1978-1982 (Saratoga and Kennedy cruises). Also flew F-14s with VF-74 from 1985-87 (again on Sara). Last flying tour was F-14A/B/D flight test at NAWC Weapons, Point Mugu, 1991-94. Your site gives rise to many exciting (and some not so exciting) memories of the couple thousand hours I spent strapped to an ejection seat! WOW. What a great page this is. I was looking for some information on the F14 as my 14year old son wants to join the R.A.F. here in the UK as soon as they will let him, quite why his favorite Aircraft is the F14 I have never worked out ?? I was checking the internet to get some information for him and looked at some of the other sites first but I didn't hang around, then I found this one, it's just as well my internet charges are fixed as I think he will be spending a lot of time reading every piece of the vast amount of information and pictures that you have compiled, a very big WELL DONE.

But then, I shouldn't be surprised, since our visit to Bechterdissen (sp.?) in 1987 when we discovered the 17-year old boy of the household where we were staying was rebuilding a 1957 Chevy sedan - and doing a great job of it! What does M.A.T.S. stand for as far as your site is concerned? My dad was in VR-1 during the war (WWII) -NATS (and part of MATS (Military Air Transport Service). They flew R4D's (DC-3's). At the time I was 13, and very interested in German ME-210's. I remember watching Charles Liindbergh test-fly a captured ME-210 over the Naval Air Test Center at Patuxent River, MD. The year was either late 1944 or early 1945. Incidentally, we have two "Connies" at the Camarillo Airport, near where I live in California. They are both flying and appear at air shows often. I was on the U.S.S. Enterprise in 1974 when the F-14's deployed for the first time. I worked in V-2 Division in the Waist Catapults. Tomcats were fun to work with, and the pilots never failed to provide with Air shows Par Excellence.

Hi There This really is a "BAKGAT" (Afrikaans word for awesome)site. I have served in the South African Air Force. I have worked as a "Bombroller" (armament technician) on a variety of aircraft like the Dassault Mirage F1 CZ (interceptor)at 3 Squadron (my home squadron), Allouette III chopper and the Aermachi/Atlas Impala Mark I & II (ground attack). Because of the annual 3 month tour we had to complete in the operational area during the Bush War in Namibia, we had to be able to operate on any of the operational aircraft. To me the Tomcat was always the ultimate a/c and it has a very special place in my heart. I have promised myself that I shall one day stand under the wing of the only cat with two tales. Did the NATOPS flight manual for the E-2C for several years, and had input to maintenence manuals for all Grumman aircraft manufacured after 1960. These include S-2F, E-2A\B\C. A-6 series. C-2A, OV-1, F-14A/B/C and what ever else I can't remember. Grumman is no longer on Long Island the way it was in years past. We were the best aircraft manufacturer in the world, made the best aiecraft, and had the best people. Thank you for your effort, you brought back some good mamories. Ray Yarsinske

Your opening page has a tomcat patch on it. "THE CAT IS BACK" in reference to the F14D, I assume. I have searched the NET high and low for one of these to put on my daughters P Coat. Can you point me in the right direction to search? I spent 5 years on the Ranger, with F4's Then I spent 3 years on the Midway, with You guessed it! F4's. But a 2 week stint aboard the Big "E" (during my Midway Tour) allowed me to observe the Tomcat first hand. Yours is the first F14 site I have been to that I spent more time reading and learning, than looking at the pictures. Great work! Massive amount of detail! Site is very easy to navigate. Great site...almost as awesome as VF-111 Sundowners (90-92). will somone tell me what in Gods name is a super hornet? A Super Tomcat is one that does 1 v.s. 2 x3 and still runs the next day!!!! If a tomcat just sits and dont fly,...well them damn Gremlins seem to attack avionics, then on start up she starts bleeding hydro fluid from her belly, (still flyable of course) and them TF-30-P414P's piss Jp5! Nothing that 87-90% Rpm cant cure! Try that with a Super piece a shit F-18 lawndart. The sucker would be out of fuel!!!!!! And that's even if it could reach 87% RPM!!!! Loved your site!!!!!! Double nutts is still the best looking aircraft I have ever seen!!!!!!! Nothing can compare to the Tomcats stand off kill. I mean the landing gear alone are badass!!!!!! A very informative website on the F-14. Its too bad that this venerable yet formidable warplane will be come fewer in number in the next century. Just have a couple of things to say. The Super Hornet can't really go toe to toe with a Sukhoi Flanker fighter. The U.S. Navy should have not have wasted time getting the proper engines to replace the inferior TF30 engines. Finally, the Navy should have had a competition between the F/A-18E/F against a F-14E(Tomcat 21) to see which was the supeior aircraft. Instead Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney for political reasons chose not to give the Tomcat a chance. Perhaps its better the old Tomcat goes into retirement with no losses to MiGs or Sukhoi's.

I worked for Grumman from 1965 to 1990. My boss, at one time, was Henry Kakowski and he I and Frank DeLeo did the bar scens--especially Mother's and the Doll House. I was part of the Training group of Don Wolf and Bud Kreuter. I made the first trining programs for the F14 pilots at NAS Miramar, Ca. I was an 'officer' in VF-1, the Wolf Pack and I designed their squadron logo. I also designed and illustrated a training aid for the Topgun Fighter Weapons School. I retired from the Pt Mugu outfit under Charley Brown.

Great site! Keep up the excellent work! The F-14 is one of the finest ever built. The Navy made a major mistake opting for the Macdac-18 over the improved Tomcat. It was supposed to be cheaper, but it wasn't. That's politics! I am retired from Grumman since 1993 after 30 years of serice. Thanks for the memories.

Great site !! Have always been impressed by the F-14. It's pitty that it's on the way out.

I really like this site because it is all about the plane that I believe is the best fighter. It's also the best looking too! The F-14 hasn't got the combat action I think that it should have gotten, as compared to what the F-16's and '15's have gotten. Like during the gulf war it only engaged a helo. Not exactly it's bread and butter fight. Maybe its just the reputation of the AWG-9 and the Phoenix missile scares any pilot painted by it's powerful radar! I am also sad that they are trying to replace the F-14 and the A-6 with the Superhornet. Don't get me wrong, the superhornet is a capable aircraft, but some A-6's should be retained, and the F-14D should remain the "Fleet Defender." I think that the Navy should keep it's airwings somewhat diverse, because conflicts are so diverse. Well, thank you for your website, I enjoyed it!

I was in the USN from 1961 to may 1968. served on board USS Ranger,USS lexington,USS Ticondaroga, USS Antiam I miss the smell of jet fuel, jet exhaust.I would like to see pictures of Aircarriers in action landing approaches to land with the meatball in sight and catshot views from the cockpit. I have only been in landings and takeoffs as a pax from the back seat of the f9f cougar and landing as pax on s2f. I was a search & rescue crewman on helicopters. I am now a supervisor of FAA Inspectors at the San Antonio Flight Standards District Office. I owe it all to my US Navy training. Keep up the good web sight.

I very much enjoyed visiting your site. I too am a Tomcat nut. I grew up a few miles from Bethpage, Long Island and was able to watch as the Tomcat grew to be the extraordinary fighter it is today. I LOVE Tomcats!

Great job on the website, i'm a huge Tomcat fan, always wanted to fly it, but my eyesight is less than perfect, and even if i did qualify, the navy's replacing the F-14, with (i still can't believe this) the F/A-18????????? Come on, what were these guys smoking? The All Mighty Tomcat can blow away the hornet in air to air engagements, and i heard from a very good source (USN pilot) it really blew the hornets in bombing accuracy, so the Tomcat is doing better than ever on it's own, ok maybe it's a bit old, but still, with a fly-by-wire controls added, new and better engine, maybe even a few more developments in strike capability (which i don't think it needs that much) the F-14 would be the most feared fighter around (forget the f-22's and the yf-23's) but it's all politics, who the hell knows, maybe someday the guys in washington in the defense department will get some sense and restart the Tomcat program, maybe someday i'll see a supertomcat21 zooming across the sky. Very unlikely i heard but i'll keep hoping. By the way, can anybody tell me if northrop grumman is going to do anything about the suggested SuperTomcat21? Is it gonna fight for it's approval in congress or what? I'd really appreciate if anyone could give me some accurate answers. I was stationed at Patuxent River at The Strike Aircraft Test Directorate from 1991-1994. There were three Tomcats there that may be of interest to you. Unfortunately I cannot remember the BUNOS, but two were configured as "D-" (D minus). F-14A airframes, with delta engines. One had a hybrid avionics/ecs setup; a combination A and D nightmare. Following receipt of our two production Ds, and the decision to end the production/retrofit effort, these two D-were stricken. One is, I believe at the Survival tank at Pax, and the other is at the Naval Academy. The sad part about this is that one had 600 hours, 1 cat, and 0 (as in no) traps, the other 900 hours, and no cats/traps. Efforts to convince the F-14 class desk to refit these to a standard D configuration instead of reworking the high time airframes in the fleet was unsuccessful.

I have seen Tomcats at airshows and I could not believe their raw power and incredible noise. They are without a doubt the most awesome and most breathtaking jet fighters ever. I shall miss them very much when they are retired and replaced by the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. The last time I saw the Tomcat was at Oceana Naval Air Station in September '97. I want to see the Tomcat one more time before it is retired.

I was an aircrew at NASNY back in the 60's and spent three years on board USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA-42) when VF-11 was flying F8's and VF-14 was flying F-4D's. I saw the F-14 close up only once, at an air show at Pratt and Whitney in East Hartford in the 70's. I sure which that I could have spent more time watching her fly.

Would you please try to get more photos of the weapons under the aircraft if possibal. Also, try to get close ups of the underside of the aircraft in flight.

HEY, I love the tomcat and always have. I almost feel ashamed to own an f-18 model considering how much glory they take from the f-14. I didn't think that there were as many people around the world that like the tomcat. I say down with the hornet. All of us tomcat lovers should write a petition to the navy saying how much injustice has been done to the tomcat and how it is so much superior to the hornet. TOMCATS FOREVER!!!!!!

From a PROUD fomer GRUMMAN employee , the count of 12,275 Hell Cats is wrong , its not something the company would like public but during production of these planes work was so hot and heavy that when the project was comlelete 2 were found in a hanger finished and ready to fly but there was no record of them ever having been built ( word was they ended up at the bottom of the Long Island Soud ? ) that would make the count 12,277. from the TOM CAT.

My name is Matthew J. Nicolau and I'm 8 years old. When I grow up I'm going to fly the F-14D Tomcat for the Jolly Rogers and go to TOPGUN at Miramar to win the TOPGUN trohy for my dad. I just took my first flight with Young Eagles Aviation Association and was co-pilot for my flight. Santa brought me a new flight suit for X-mas and it has the TOPGUN and Jolly Rogers patches on it. I'm going to be the best Jolly Roger pilot in the Navy. I have lots of Tomcat planes, models and books. After my first flight with Young Eagles, I went to Fighter Pilots U.S.A. and met Commander Ross. He took me through the whole program and gave me my name patch, commander's bars and my pilot's wings. I want to go to Fighter Pilots U.S.A. for trainning and win the trophy for that too. The best thing about my first flight was that I flew in a Grumman Tiger aircraft made by the same company that makes the TOMCAT. I think that shows why I'm going to be a Jolly Roder Tomcat Pilot and the BEST of the Best! I really like your F-14 TOMCAT Websight. Thank you and Talley Ho! P.S. - I also like the SR-71 Blackbird.

dear ......., i have always loved f-14s and you are lucky because you have the only website. i want to be an f-14 piolet, are you? if so, how many missions have you flown. i am 12 but i have been interested in planes since i first saw one which is about when i was 2 years old. i like f-14s best but my secend favorite plane is the 747. i do like commercial airliners better, but the f-14 is the top tommy!!! catch ya later, please wright, danny foster

Hi dear: Realy I enjoyed of your web site, it was wonderful for me, specially when i was searching web to see more photo's of F-14, I was born in tehran, Iran is the only country in the world except USA that has F-14, I have a lot of memories about my chidhood when we watch F-14 during the war with Iraq especially the first day of war that Iraq attacked without announce to all iranian airports also MEhrABAD air port in tehran then we childeren shut in the schools F-14 shut-down that stupied MIG and how we were proud of this aircraft, for your more information still F-14 are in duty in Iranian Air Force because of their brave pilots and smart Engineer and technicians, thank you that you bring my childhood memories in my mind. I just wanted to say that its a very good home page and i would like to add that the tomcat is a thrue surviver its been used in combat by USA and allso the by the only secondery nation who has purchased the tomcat Iran. Just by looking at the Iran Iraq war we can what an incredebel aircraft it is how it was use as mini AWACS by Iran and allso escorted phantoms to pound the iraqi troops thus making Iraq to withdraw from Iran, and to this in a cuntry of confission and not to forget the lack of sperparts.

Maybe in the future you could list w/pics the tail designs of all Tomcat's A very nice site and informative keep up the good work

I spent 15 years on the F-14 program working on the flight manual, and my remaining years were in Public Relations as the Assistant Corporate Historian. Initial cadre at Behtpage w/3 other AQ's with VF-124 parked first fleet F-14, Cdr Taylor VF-2, seems how the Wolfpack F-14 had problems on way to Miramar, Did 2nd 3rd & 4th cruises w/VF-2. Best F-14 mech ever: Fast Eddie Norton, great friend will miss him.
