F-111B

Even though the F-111 was designed by General Dynamics, General Dynamics and Grumman (with knowledge about swing-wing carrier aircraft) teamed up to enter the competition for the joint-service TFX programme. The TFX was an air superiority fighter for both the Air Force and Navy. The F-111B was the naval version of the F-111 with a shorter nose, capability for 6 AIM-54 Phoenix air-to-air missiles and long-range radar. Among other problems, the F-111B proved to be too heavy and big for the Navy's carriers. When the F-111B was cancelled in 1967, the Navy looked for a replacement and launched the VFX programme which was won by Grumman's F-14 Tomcat.
