The Grumman design G-44 was a light amphibian transport aircraft, first flown sometime in 1941. Grumman delivered 25 J4F-1s to the Coast Guard plus some 131 J4F-2s for the Navy. The J4F-2 was similar to the J4F-1, crewed by a pilot and co-pilot plus up to three passengers.
