F-14 Lighting System
The F-14 has three kinds of lights:
- Navigation lights
- Anti-collision lights
- Position lights.
Navigation lights and anti-collision lights are active under normal flight conditions. The red anti-collision lights are strobe lights that flash up permanently while the navigation lights (red and blueish green) are permanently on.
The position lights are light yellow/green bars on the nose, wing tip, tail tips and rear fuselage. On a night combat mission these lights enable aircrews to fly in formation without the use of the navigation and anti-collision lights.
There is another position light on the chinpod and landing lights at the nose landing gear.
Additionally, there is a small red light on the refuelling probe strut as shown in the photo below.
