The tow target is used for aerial gunnery up to speeds of 250 knots. Gun hits can later on the ground be counted by counting the holes in the tow target. If more than one aircraft practices aerial gunnery with the same tow target, usually different coloured wet lacquers are used to mark each bullet of practicing fighters.
